This Lebanon County RSVP of the Capital Region Volunteer of the Month for March is Jan Glatfelter. She chose to serve with Support Connections of Lebanon County (SCLC – formerly known as Palmyra Circles), over four years ago. Originally from York County, she travelled the country and came back to settle in Palmyra to be closer to her three children and three grandchildren. Jan retired in 2010 after a long career with AT&T. For her there is nothing more fulfilling than helping local families achieve economic stability and have a more fulfilling life.
Jan’s biggest awakening came that year when she went on vacation. She quickly realized that after being away, even for a short time, she missed the families she had gotten so close to, saying they were like extended family. When working with a couple whose husband had been going from job to job, by providing coaching through the SCLC program, the results were astounding. With the support of SCLC volunteers, the husband was able to secure full-time work, and the wife completed college credits and their life is on track for a future of financial stability.
SCLC expanded to Lebanon in 2015. The program offers a hand up, rather than a hand out. Through networking, mentoring and relationships, a volunteer is teamed up with individuals and families to provide a support mechanism for them to work toward financial stability, independence and future goal setting.
Jan has worked with over eighteen families to help get their life on track. When Jan isn’t volunteering with SCLC, she fills her spare time with reading, spiritual growth and travelling. Jan also volunteered with a church, has served on the Palmyra Area Cooperating Churches (PACC) committee, the Core planning team for SCLC, and other community support programs.
Glad to be a volunteer, Jan says “it’s reciprocal. What we give to the families and they give back is so rewarding”. This gives her a great sense of family and belonging and she wouldn’t trade the love she gets back for anything!
